3 Key Traits of a Well-Managed Assisted Living Home

There comes a time in life for many elderly people where it is not safe or practical to remain in their own homes. For example, mobility levels may decline to the point that moving around the home or going up and down stairs presents a serious risk of slips, trips or falls. In the elderly, this can result in serious injuries such as fractures being sustained and may lead to extended periods spent recovering in hospital. In addition, senior citizens may find that they begin to struggle with cooking, cleaning and personal hygiene routines in later life. In these circumstances, it can be highly beneficial to consider moving to an assisted living home, where their health and social needs can be met. However, it is often difficult to know which facility is the best and how to spot a well-run establishment from a poorly managed one. In this article, three key traits of a professionally managed assisted living home will be discussed.

1.    The residents enjoy life there

A well-managed establishment will be able to create an assisted living community where residents retain most of their independence whilst being supported by the staff in terms of their care and social needs. Residents should be asked for their opinions of life in the assisted living establishment and if they would change any aspects of it. Speak to a range of guests when you visit the facility and ask questions to ascertain key information to determine if their needs are served and the type of activities and amenities that they have access to. Ideally, there will be a range of social and recreational activities on offer that stimulate the residents and allow them to socialize and be creative. Take their views into consideration before deciding if the establishment is suitable for you or your elderly relative’s needs.

2.    Staff are attentive and empathetic

In all forms of healthcare, it is vital to have empathetic staff who are attentive to the needs of their patients or residents. This is a key aspect of any well-run assisted living facility as it is a key determinant of the standards of care that the residents will receive. Staff must be able to deal with the elderly and demonstrate compassion and understanding when assisting them, preparing care plans and communicating with them. This simple act of humanity can make residents feel relaxed and welcome in the establishment and will ensure that they ask for assistance when required.

3.    Managers welcome visits

A final key trait of a well-managed assisted living home is that they will welcome visits to the premises. They will be proud of the services they offer and will be happy for visitors to talk to residents as they are confident that they provide the highest standards of care and hospitality. Always be wary of assisted living facilities that do not allow visitors, or those that actively discourage visitors from speaking to residents. This may indicate that high standards of care are not being provided and that the elderly do not enjoy living there. Unfortunately, a small proportion of nursing and assisted living homes are run purely for profit, and these should be avoided as it is highly unlikely that they will have the same high standards as well-run facilities.
