Dream Big Princess: Why Princess Is Not A Bad Word

I have noticed a growing trend these days. People saying we shouldn’t refer to our daughters as “princess”. saying Princess is basically a bad word… How did we come to this? Why is it that a little girl who loves princess seen as a negative thing all of a sudden? I have read the articles, and have to say I respectfully disagree with most of the sentiments regarding princess negativity. My daughter, she loves princesses, and in our house Princess is not a bad word.

Dream Big Princess: Why Princess is not a bad word. Princesses are strong, brave, adventurous and smart. #DreamBigPrincess #DisneySprings

When Did Princess Become a Bad Word?

When attending the Dream Big Princess event at Disney Springs, I found myself wondering…. Just when did we start associating the word “Princess” with negative connotations? When I was growing up, no one seemed to think twice about calling their little girl Princess…Yet now, there are posts, videos, and so much content saying how we shouldn’t do this. People tend to have this vision in their mind that Princess is a bad word, and calling our girls princess is demeaning them and setting them up for a life of needing to be saved. Honestly, I am quite tired of hearing how I shouldn’t call my daughter Princess.

What Princess Means To Me

I personally don’t believe that the Princess moniker means “weak” “subservient” or “needs a man”… If you look at, really look, Princesses are so much more than that.  Princesses are strong, adventurous, and brave. They have complex emotions and are often the hero of their own story…I mean Mulan is a technical Princess and she saved China!

In my home, I call my daughter Princess. She loves Princesses and dresses up in her Rapunzel dress pretty much daily. She loves it because she feels beautiful and it is fun. You know what she also loves to do? Go outside and play, create her own world with Legos, and help her mechanic dad in the garage. You see, this little Princess, and all Princesses, can be and do anything their heart desires, and still look fabulous doing it.

Dream Big Princess

In order to combat this war on the Princess and show that Princess is not a bad word, Disney has initiated their Dream Big Princess initiative. They are using the power of video and social media to show the true meaning of a Princess. With their Dream Big Princess initiative, they have teamed up with 21 inspiring women to create a video series aimed at empowering girls. Disney is also partnering with Girl Up, a UN foundation that supports and empowers girls worldwide, to donate $1 every time you share a photo Disney Bounding and using the hashtag #DreamBigPrincess . They will be donating up to one million dollars from now up until November 20th.

So teach your little Princess to Dream Big and support this amazing cause by sharing why your favorite Disney Princess inspires you! And don’t forget, Princess is not a bad word, it is an empowering one and we need to take that back.

It's not a label, it's a compliment. There are very few limitations on girls nowadays.

The way society is going worries me, I see no problem with the label princess. Disney films are changing with times and creating strong, independent princesses.

This is the most silliest thing every, can not believe smoe people think or even live like this that calling someone a princess is a bad thing. My daughter would be upset if I did not call her my princess.

I don't think Princess is a bad word. There is nothing wrong with being loved and put on a pedestal sometimes. I think the issue comes in when girls are limited to one thing and not given the option to flourish is others also.

I do think we are in a era where people take words and over sensitize them and princess to certain people can be triggering. I dont think it is a bad word its cute.
