It seems like in today’s world there is an extreme focus on childhood education. This is wonderful. I think it is so important that we educate our children and make sure they are school ready and learning at a good pace. Sometimes this mentality can go too far though. Our kids need not only structured learning, but unstructured play time as well. Kids learn through play, especially at a young age. Unstructured play time can lead to increased imagination, less stress, and an overall happier kid! It is also a fun way for parents to get involved and just get down on their child’s level and really play and connect.
Why Learn Through Play?
It seems like some parents just truly don’t understand the learn through play concept. We have had it drilled into us that we should be pushing structure and education so our children will be advanced and school ready. In all honesty though, this can lead to more stress and unhappy kids and parents. At young ages, kids learn best through play. It is their way of learning about the world around them while really “excising” their imaginations. Unstructured play time not only lets children be imaginative, it can also lead to increased social and cognitive skills as well as help them mature emotionally and gain self-confidence. Certain types of toys can even inspire children and they will learn new skills without even realizing it.
Encouraging Unstructured Play Time With PLAYMOBIL
In my quest to encourage more creative and unstructured play time with my daughter, we headed to our local Walmart to pick up a fun PLAYMOBIL play set. They had so many fun sets to choose from. From the realistic world like plice and firefighters, to the more fantastic world of modern day dinosaurs, these play sets are perfect for inspiring imaginative play. With so many high quality sets to choose from, it was difficult to make a decision but my daughter instantly gravitated towards this PLAYMOBIL Hidden Temple with T-Rex.

Full disclosure, I was rather happy she chose the dinosaurs! Not only is this a fun way to let her imagination run wild, it is also a perfect way to turn it into a teachable experience. As she plays, builds and creates, I have the opportunity to talk to her about what dinosaurs were really like. So not only are we inspiring a creative mind and boosting cognitive and social skills, but we are learning about actual science at the same time!
My daughter has been non stop playing with her Hidden Temple. We have found that after school, she tends to feel very pent up. Children spend their school day following a structured schedule. Once they are home, there is a tendency to melt down and release pent up energy. In order to counteract the meltdown, I have found that unstructured play time allows my daughter to be free, have fun, and get out any pent up frustration from the school day. It is a perfect way to allow kids to unwind without using technology.
How We Unwind
As I said, I think it is important to allow kids to unwind with unstructured play time. It allows them to release that pent up energy, be creative, and learn without realizing it! Once we are home from school, my daughter gets a snack and goes to play in back porch/play room. I like to make sure she gets at minimum 30 minutes of this screen free imaginative play time daily, but honestly she usually plays for much longer than that. It feels good to see your child laughing and learning and being creative. Knowing that this isn’t just play time, but is a time for her to expand her mind is something that is super important for me as a mom.
