Choosing the perfect family vehicle can be a huge chore. There are so many options out there and each of them offers something new and exciting, but what do you really need? I know when I decided to buy my first new vehicle, it felt like I had no clue what I was doing! Everything from package options, size, MPG, and even choosing the right insurance were foreign for me! Thankfully, I made it through my experience wiser and more aware! So if you are in the market for a new ( or new to you) family vehicle, here are my tips for getting the perfect one for your unique needs!
Choosing The Perfect Family Vehicle
Before I bought my Jeep, I had been driving my husband’s big pick up truck. When I say big, I mean it! The thing was a tank! Long and just too big for me to be driving really. While it worked for what I needed at the time, I knew that since we planned on having another baby and taking a number of road trips, I would need a new family vehicle. Making the decision on exactly what to get was a little daunting to be honest. It actually took me getting into an accident in the big red truck to really think long and hard about getting something new.
Yup, you hear me, I wrecked my husband’s big red truck! As a former personal injury paralegal, I was lucky enough to know how to handle an accident, but it still shook me! The accident was my fault, and I knew deep down it was because this truck was just too much for me to handle. So, I sat down and made my list of “must haves” for the new vehicle I planned on buying! Once my list was made, my husband and I started the real search. Test driving and trying to work some deals. I ended up with my perfect family vehicle, a 2015 Jeep Renegade. While it may not be ideal for all families, it was perfect for me and my needs.
Below, you will see how I came to this decision, and how I knew that this was the car for me! You can use these tips to help find the right vehicle for you too! Just remember, every family’s needs are unique so what works for your neighbor, may not be the best option for you!
How Big Is Your Family?
So the first question that should be asked, is how big is your family? Not just at the moment, but how big do you see it getting? I personally will only be having the 2 children ( well, that’s all I PLAN on anyways). So I did not need anything huge, which is great for me! I will admit, I am not the best at driving giant vehicles. I did not want anything the size of a bus that could fit 7 passengers. My needs and family size dictated I just needed to be able to fit my husband, myself, the 2 kids, and out fur baby! So if you have a large family, you will probably want something on the larger side, but if it is small like mine, you can get away with something a little more compact.
Is MPG Important?
Next, ask yourself how important MPG is to you. Will you be driving often? Far distances? Just around town? These are all factors to help determine your perfect family vehicle. For me, I wanted something with decent MPG, but wasn’t stressed about it being not the best since I wouldn’t be driving as far as often. My Renegade gets on average 23 MPG, which is great! Larger vehicles will typically get less, or you can always see about investing in a hybrid! Since I got a vehicle with more middle range MPG, I like to use the GEICO hacks for saving on gas. I mean, who doesn’t like to save when you can right?
What About The Pets?
Are you a fur baby mom as well? Me too, and I wanted to make sure my 80 Lb lap dog was riding in comfort when we go on trips together. She fits perfectly in the very back of my Jeep, and it is super easy to put a sheet down and dog bed to keep her comfortable and her hair contained! Thinking about your pets when buying a vehicle is something I don’t think most people keep in mind, but totally should! We go to North Carolina often, and take our pooch with us, so it was something important for us. You can even really improve the quality of your road trip woth pets by checking out these tips from GEICO. Seriously, they are a lifesaver especially on longer trips!
The Bells and Whistles
What bells and whistles do you really need for your perfect family vehicle? Fully loaded? The basic package? Somewhere in between? I went with a middle range package for my Jeep and do not regret it at all! While I wanted the NAV system, I did not really care about an upgraded sound system or heated seats. I mean, I live in Florida so heated seats are not necessary. For you, heated seats may be a must have, especially if you live in a cooler climate. Take into consideration what you need, what you want, and what you can afford. There were a few things I wanted that I did not get, but they were not needs. For example, the 4WD option. It would have been nice, but I rarely ever need it. There is no snow, and I don’t off road in my Fiat-Jeep love child, so really it did not make sense for me to spend that extra money. Do what makes sense for you! See what the options are! Oh, and side note, make sure to check if your vehicle comes with a spare tire! I had assumed ( not a good idea) that all new vehicles come with a spare, but apparently that is not the case! Check this out to debunk this and other tire myths!
