Date Night Ideas that Won’t Break the Bank

As a mom, I am always trying to find fun and inexpensive things to do with the kids. Because of that though, sometimes I slack on trying to find things to do with my husband. I recently did a post about keeping the romance alive after kids, and part of that was having a date night. I realize that not everyone is able to spend exorbitant amounts of money on fancy dates, heck a lot of parents can’t even get a baby sitter! So for those individuals I have compiled this list of awesome and inexpensive date night options!

A list of simple and inexpensive date night ideas. Perfect for parents!

Date Night Ideas

Movie Night In

So many of us simply do not have the time nor money to go out to the movies. The next best thing would be bringing the movies to you! This is one you can do once the kids are in bed, so you won’t have to worry about getting a sitter. Just make some popcorn, pick out one of your favorite movies and cuddle up on the couch! Want to make it more “authentic” you can get fancy with Plastic Popcorn Containers in order to make the experience seem even more authentic. My husband and I love movie night in because we can pause the movie if we want to, we can cuddle on the couch and we can eat popcorn that is much cheaper than at the theater!

Backyard Camping

This is another date night where you don’t need a baby sitter. Once the kids are fast asleep, just set up your tent in the back yard and you are ready to go! I have this tent and it is perfect!  You can make an entire experience out of it by building a fire, roasting marshmallows, and even cooking on the grill outside. You can enjoy a night free from technology, giving you are your significant other time to really connect. Bonus, if the kids need you for some reason you are just right outside.

Picnic

Who doesn’t love a good picnic? It is simple and inexpensive, but thoughtful at the same time. The only real investment here is the basket and the food.  You can pickup an awesome basket set, like this one, that has everything you need for a perfect picnic. B est part is, you can use it time and time again! Make some cute sandwiches and your own chocolate covered strawberries and head to your favorite park. You can eat and enjoy each other’s company, no cell phones allowed!

Fondue for Two

My husband and I love fondue, but it is so expensive to go out for it. So we bought a fondue set and do it at home now instead! Often times we get our daughter involved as well and do it as a fun family night, but there are other times where we utilize it for a fun date night in. Sleeping kinds equals date night time! Our rule is for all of our date night experiences, cell phones stay put away unless an emergency arises.

Game Night

While this can be a fun family activity, board games can also make for awesome date nights.  Pick out a game that isn’t you family game night game and get to playing! Cards Against Humanity is always a fun choice. There are so many “adult” board games out there that you can do this once a week and try a new game each time if you want!

Go for a Drive

My husband is a car nut, so anything involving cars is a good idea to him. Going for a scenic drive can be a fun date for anyone though. Find a back road, roll the windows down and cruise. It doesn’t matter if you live in the mountains, the dessert or the beach there are always beautiful scenic roads to travel.

Go Fishing

You might need a fishing license for this one, but it is a rather inexpensive and fun date! You can get some relatively inexpensive fishing poles, some hot dogs for bait and find a local lake to enjoy the day at. This can even be combined in with a picnic (a two for one deal). Even if you don’t catch any fish, I guarantee you will have a blast trying.

Thrifting

Spend the day going to your local thrift stores or yard sales and look for unique pieces. You can maybe even find some fun inspiration for a DIY project that the two of you can do together!

Local Festivals

At least where I love, there is almost always some local festival going on nearby. They are typically free to get into as well. My town has a Friday art-walk downtown that is so much fun as well as different blueberry and chili cook-off festivals going year round. You can typically find awesome local entrepreneurs and crafters there as well.

Garage Date

One of mine and my husband’s favorite things to do once the kids are asleep is enjoy an adult beverage in our garage. We get out the folding chairs, pop open a drink and just sit and talk about the day.

Biking

Not only is riding a bicycle great exercise, it is fun too! Most places have local trails for bikers, all you have to do is look. Trail riding can make for a fun afternoon, but even a ride around your neighborhood can be an enjoyable time!

Not all dates need to be expensive! Some of the best times dates you can go on are practically free!27

I could probably go on and on about more date night, or day date ideas that are relatively inexpensive, but I won’t overwhelm you with a giant list! These mentioned above are some of mine and my husband’s favorite things to do. Most of them can be done with the kids, when the kids are in bed, or sometimes we do leave them with grandma for a day.  I would love to hear what some of your favorite dates are. Let me know in the comments below!

My husband and I are all about finding festivals in our area and going. We’ve moved to a smaller town so it’s harder to find, but it’s my favorite thing to do!

I think a lot of our date nights are a date-night-in. We are trying to budget more this year, but mainly because there aren’t a ton of places to go out where we live right now!

I love these ideas, one of my friends does a day night where her boyfriend and her go to the thrift store separately and pick out an outfit for one another and then they go out to dinner wearing those outfits! They say its a fun way to get creative but also to have some good laughs!!!

LOL i know I have tried convincing my husband several times, but I think he knows my outfit for him would be ridiculous! Good luck!!

We do a lot of these things now. With two daughters, one fixing to graduate highschool, and the other in middle school, all of our money goes to them at the moment, so free and cheap date nights are our jam!

I can’t do game night in my house (with family or with husband) because I am such a sore loser…but we LOVE movie night at home. Trying to find a sitter that will deal with all three of our kids is kind of difficult 🙂

When I lived in NYC and Chicago one of my favorite things to do was just go for a walk and explore a new neighborhood. Sometimes I did this with friends, other times I enjoyed it with whoever I was dating. It’s a simple activity to do, but you can learn a lot about where you live and who you are with.

Love your suggestions. My husband and I are without kids, so sometimes a fun date night is just to get away from the house and so something to help others. We recognize our blessings and feel good, too.

Such a wonderful list of ideas. Since having kids we’ve learned to get creative, but I am definitely going to adopt a few of your ideas 🙂

These are such cute ideas! I love the idea of doing fondue at home. It gets so expensive eating it out! I’ve never done backyard camping beore, but I definitely want to give it a try.

These are some great ideas!! I am always trying to think of a few things to do at home when the kids go to bed because it’s not always convenient to find a sitter and go out!!

You seriously don’t have to spend a lot for date night, after all, what matters is that you spend time together. These are lovely ideas and they’re pretty romantic as well.
