A Busy Mom’s Night Time Skincare Routine

I am by no means a beauty blogger, but I do enjoy makeup and skincare. Ever since I had my son, my skin has gone insane! I have been getting breakouts like I haven’t had since I was a teen. So I needed to find some sort of routine that I could do quickly and would be effective.  After playing around and trying some different products, I think I have found some that really work for me.

I have decently oily skin and a tendency to get TERRIBLE blackheads (gross I know). I have watched routine videos and read posts but everything seems to take so long and I need to be quick. It needs to happen while my oldest is in the tub and my youngest is asleep.

Wash

It’s simple, the first thing I do after washing my daughter is wash my face. I have tried a TON of different facial soap in the past, but I have found that I really like the REFRESH Gentle Foaming Cleanser from Pure and True Organic. I really enjoy that it is gentle on my skin and I don’t feel super dried out after using it but it still cleanses all the dirt and excess oil away. What I feel like really puts my skin cleansing over the top though is my Clarisonic Mia 2 with the Deep Pore head attachment. This brush was the best skincare investment that I have ever made. Yes, it is an investment because it is about $170 for the brush, but it is completely worth it! The first week or so using it my skin freaked out and “purged” itself (all the nasty gunk came to the surface, YUCK), but after that my face had never felt so smooth and been so breakout free. This rush really gets down deep into the pores, exfoliates and cleans out your skin. I use mine daily, but if you have more sensitive skin only use it three or so times a week. You only use it for one minute, and the brush times itself for you. Start on your forehead area, then it “vibrates at you”, move to the chin and nose area until it signals you to move to one cheek and then the other. It is simple and the rechargeable (and waterproof) battery lasts forever! The brush heads are good for about 3-6 months before you need to change them, so really after the initial investment you are only going to buy new heads at $27 each.

Mask

I don’t use a mask every night, but I try to a few times a week. I like to try out different masks but I always seem to come back to my absolute favorite Aztec Indian Healing Clay. It is a dry clay powder. It is easy to customize and lasts FOREVER! You make the mask by mixing it with either water or apple cider vinegar (what I use and recommend). Mix in a 1:1 ratio, but sometimes I add a little extra powder because I like a thicker consistency. This mask will pull EVERYTHING out of your pores, so don’t be surprised if your face is a little bit red after use. I have consistently heard this mask compared to the Glam Glow Super Mud mask. It needs to dry for about twenty minutes, which in busy mom time can seem like forever, but with my daughter happily playing in the tub I typically put on my mask and nurse my youngest while it dries (multitasking for the win!). Once it is dry, it will feel super tight and like it is cracking off. Just wash it off with a wash-cloth and warm water and you are good to go!

Serum

I never thought a serum was important, but boy was I wrong! It has made SUCH a difference since I have implemented one in my skincare routine. I have been switching back and forth between the Nip + Fab Glycolic Overnight Purifying Gel and the Skin Laundry Night Serum. Between the two, I don’t actually have a favorite. They both are very similar and provide powerful chemical exfoliation. The Nip + Fab is less expensive so for anyone on a budget, I would recommend going with this brand. Basically they are able to rid your face of the top layer of skin without harsh scrubbing. They get down into your pores to clear them out while you sleep. I will put on my serum and let it soak in for a minute or two before moving on.

Acne Treatment

If i have any unruly breakouts, I will use a spot treatment to help zap that nasty bugger down fast! My favorite is the Origins Spot Remover . I put this on a blemish and it has significantly decreased in size or disappeared completely overnight!

Moisturizer

Even though I am rather oily, I still like a good nighttime moisturizer as part of my skincare routine. It is a  myth that oily skin does not need moisture. It does and your face will thank you for it later! I typically use the Origins High Potency Night-A-Mins. It is pretty thick but it does not feel heavy and it sinks in quickly. I hate when a moisturizer leaves me feeling greasy. I want one that sinks in and does its job, and Origins fits the bill!

Oil

I know, you are probably thinking why use a facial oil when I have oily skin, but trust me it is the best thing since sliced bread! I use the Origins Night-A-Mins Oil and it is the last step in my skincare routine! The oil is last for a reason. It is able to sink through the other products and into the skin. Other products are unable to sink past an oil and therefore will not be properly absorbed if used last. Since I have oily skin, you would think that I would have to be insane to put another oil on my face, but in reality the use of a facial oil can actually DECREASE the amount of sebum that your oil glands produce. Like attracts like, so the facial oil is attracted to your natural oil and oil glands. This along with a smaller molecular size, is why the oil is able to penetrate the layers of product to reach the skin. When the skin absorbs the facial oil, it recognizes it and it signals the oil glands to not produce more sebum. If you dry out your face too much, your body will signal the oil glands to produce MORE oil in order to compensate for the lack of moisture. This is why using an oil and a moisturizer are extremely important even for us with oil skin.

Skincare Junkie

By this time, my daughter is ready to get out of the bath and my son is probably waking up from a very short lived moment of silence. All in all (not including the days I use the mask) this routine takes me about 5-10 minutes from start to finish. It is simple and it works. The products are high quality, and can be safely used by anyone who is pregnant or nursing (bonus!)

I would LOVE to hear what skincare products you swear by because I am always up for trying new products because I am a skincare junkie.

Looking forward to connecting with you, and don’t forget to share the love!

I bought my “clarisonic” type of brush from Mary Kay, they currently have one for $50 and u get two heads one pink one white so if your husband or daughter wants to do it too they can. It’s like a massage after a long day! When I’m completely routined I use Mary Kay! Give it a 21 day challenge, it is amazing, 21 days straight of washing it in the morning and night, no slacking and it is a gem! But when I’m struggling to get my shit together I use noxema. OG for sure! Thanks for sharing your routine!

I drink lots of water and moisturise in the morning. I stopped wearing makeup nine years ago and I wash my face with a gentle soap. I did start out with good, but oily skin, although I was a very spotty teenager.

I rarely wear makeup anymore, especially since I’m not in the working world right now, so that helps. And you are right that water is super important 🙂 I have been told that oily skin ages better and gets less wrinkles so I’m pretty happy if that’s true 🙂

I don’t use any kind of skin care products, but I am getting older so I should probably start, huh? Thanks for the tips.

It is nice to know that I am not alone, as a parent of two older kids and with wrinkles we still get pimples. I would love to find a great product line and the Origins line looks amazing for all my needs

Skincare is one routine that just do not have. I just use whatever I got on sale. But I should start putting more thought into it.

Skincare is soooo important! I wish I would’ve learned this early on in my teen years…. Serum is something I never did but now I use an amazing vitamin A serum every single night… my skin has never been the same since! (In a good way!)
I need to try more masks and commit to one but I always forget or get lazy!

My skin got really bad when I was pregnant with my oldest that I went to a dermatologist who recommended a skin care routine I’m still using 15 years later. I breakout easily too but have noticed too that because of my #autoimmune disease that when I eat dairy, gluten and sugar, my breakouts get worse. Its like my face tells the world when I cheat on my autoimmune diet. 🙂 thanks for sharing what works for you, it’s such a puzzle to figure out good skincare routines.

I am a serious skincare junkie! I tried that Clarisonic Mia brush and it was too harsh for my skin, it made my skin so dry! I love any N+F product, too
